“The Secret Sharer”: Character Analysis of Joseph Conrad’s Captain and Leggatt in this Late Nineteenth Century Sea Novel
[ send me this paper ]
The author of this paper asserts that despite Conrad’s continued emphasis of the similarities between the captain and Leggatt, these characters are really more complimentary than similar. The conclusion is reached that both their fates and their backgrounds are completely disparate. Even the manners in which the captain and Leggatt acknowledge their own weaknesses are more complimentary of each other than they are similar. Leggatt has learned to live with his shortcomings, even to come to terms with himself. The captain, on the other hand, is almost always in a perpetual state of self doubt. A Critical Analysis of John Hospers’ “Argument Against Skepticism”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page report analyzing John Hospers’ “Argument Against Skepticism”. John Hospers’ “Argument Against Skepticism” provides several requirements and conditions for “knowing”: propositions must be true, must be believed to be true and evidence must be available in support of the propositions. The question of evidence remains controversial for the most part as Hospers and critics submit that the degree of evidence must be good enough for those to believe it. “Knowing” is also considered by Hospers to have a “weak” and “strong” sense in which a “weak” sense is used by most people on a daily basis and is based on individuals’ having good reason to belief a proposition is true based on the evidence whereas a “strong” sense of knowing has absolutely conclusive evidence in support of it and is what interests philosophers the most. Hospers’ arguments differ from that of Descartes and also a great deal from the hypotheses presented by the skeptics; Descartes with the concept that knowledge itself proves existence and the skeptics presenting that nothing is known for certain.

A Position on Bluestone’s Essay “The Inequality Express”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page position paper in regards to Barry Bluestone’s essay “The Inequality Express”. In his paper “The Inequality Express”, Barry Bluestone (1996) discusses aspects of the trends predicted by British sociologist Michael Young in his 1958 book “The Rise of Meritocracy, 1870-2033” in which an individual’s socioeconomic status would no longer be based on lineage or family connections but instead on the differences of education, intelligence, experience and effort by the year 2034. While Bluestone writes that he has not seen such a revolution yet within society he and other social economists believe that there are three clearly defined trends which are consistent: that the distribution of earnings (in the U.S. and the U.K.) reflect the distribution of formal education in the workforce; “the gap in earning between the well educated and the not-so-well educated is steadily increasing”; and, the standard of living for those who are less educated is declining. Despite these trends, Bluestone and his colleagues present possible solutions to the end of inequality; most of which seem unlikely in today’s global free market society.

Abortion And The Women's Movement
[ send me this paper ]
It is naturally assumed and probably correct that the women's movement began in the latter two decades of the nineteenth century. By the early 1930's, it was believed that gender roles had been culturally constructed in such a manner as to preclude such access by perpetrating a system of subjugation and beliefs that women were inferior to men. This opened the gates to advocating changes in social structure and cultural norms. From a women's history point of view the issue of abortion has run the gamut from total opposition to advocating for safe and economic access. The nineteenth-century women's rights advocates were unanimous in opposing abortion. This 5 page paper presents, in essay form, a brief history of the women's movement and the changes in attitude, within the movement, concerning abortion.

Abortion Ethics
[ send me this paper ]
12 pages in length. Throughout history, there has not likely been a more fiery or controversial issue than that of abortion. The ethical concerns that revolved around the abortion issue are those that encompass a great many ideals - both religious and personal - that have to do with an individual's concept of right and wrong. To some, the ethical implications mean allowing the woman her right to choose; to others, it is no different than murder.
