Labour Market Trends in Hong Kong
[ send me this paper ]
This 75 page dissertation papers examines the labour market in Hong Kong. Language Diversity In UK Businesses
[ send me this paper ]
A 14 page paper. Less than one percent of the entire British work force is identified as ethnic minority. Even so, companies whose employees represent more than one culture and language will sometimes be faced with language barriers. To fully understand the obstacles language can present, it is also necessary to have a basic understanding of the cultures involved. The focus of this paper is on businesses in Britain that have Chinese employees. Because culture and language cannot be separated, the discussion also includes comments on the British and Chinese cultures. The essay ends with recommendations for overcoming language barriers in the workplace. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Learning of Self
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) When we first begin to make the effort of
learning, or deciding who we are, or who we want
to be, we usually have to take into account how
others perceive us. Naturally the first who do
that are our parents. We have that problem
presented in the readings that we have been given:
Amy Tann's "Two Kinds," and Danzy Senna's
"The Mulatto Millennium." These two works will be
used as a basis for the "learning of self."

Legitimacy of China’s Legal System and the Strength of the
Chinese Communist Party
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the facts
that as China modernizes and becomes a more accepted partner in
global enterprises and market opportunities, the Western world is
more carefully evaluating the society that has evolved in modern
China. The debates surrounding issues as varied as trade
normalization, human rights violations, and whether or not China
has any hope of hosting the Olympics, those in the debate
repeatedly ask whether or not China has really changed (or is
changing). Seeing how the Chinese government reacts to its own
citizens who criticize it suggests that beneath the facade of
international business, the totalitarian behemoth still lurks.
In addition, the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) remains firmly in
control of virtually all social, judicial, and political
occurrences in the nation. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Leo Ou-Fan Lee/Shanghai Modern
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page book review that profiles this text. In the preface to his book Shanghai Modern, author Leo Ou-Fan Lee summarizes his text concisely in one sentence: "This is a book about the city of Shanghai in the 1930s as a cultural matrix of Chinese modernity" (Lee xi). Unlike many Western scholars who have written about Shanghai, Lee offers an "insider's point of view" by looking primarily at Chinese material, that is, "literary journals, newspapers as well as works by individual authors and scholars" in order to construct a "picture of Shanghai's urban culture at the height of its splendor" (Lee xi). Examination of this text shows that Lee succeeded admirably in his goal, as the reader acquires from Lee a nuanced, multi-level perspective on Shanghai culture during this period. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Literature of Marriage in China
[ send me this paper ]
An 11 page paper examining 10
anthropologically-centered journal articles discussing studies and observations on Chinese
marriage patterns. China existed as a closed society long before the advent of communism in

superior to all others, particularly in their family relationships. The economic changes resulting
from greater opening of the country in the past generation have lead to changes in marriage
patterns that have been dictated by tradition for thousands of years, as these 10 articles
demonstrate. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

A 5 page research paper/essay that analyzes a work by Ma Yuan of the Chinese Song Dynasty period. The art of Ma Yuan (c. 1155-1225), along with that of Xia Gui, represents the highest level of Chinese painting during the Song dynasty (1127-1279) (Ma Yuan). This 5 page report
discusses whether or not China’s modernization and its
partnership in global enterprises and market opportunities
demonstrates a true commitment to modernization and advancement
of its society and the Chinese people or to an advancement of its
military capabilities. Focus on the people of China by its
government in modern times has always been in terms of the
people’s ability, if not always willingness, to support its

A 7 page research paper/essay that discusses 2 films in reference to Chinese national identity. Cinema has become one of the main means of societal discourse that expresses how people perceive and define themselves and their society. In other words, national cinemas contribute to the conceptualization of national identity and influence the way in which people perceive their place in the contemporary world, as well as their past. The following examination of this sociological phenomenon focuses on two Chinese films: “The Killer” (1989) directed by John Woo and “The Blue Kite” (1993) directed by Tian Zhangzhuang. The writer also discusses what critics say about the ways in which national cinemas are defined and perceived. Bibliography is incomplete and lists 7 sources.

Nien Cheng’s “Life and Death in Shanghai”
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report
discusses the autobiographical account of Nien Cheng’s
experiences during China’s Cultural Revolution. “Life and Death
in Shanghai” by Nien Cheng requires that the reader or student be
particularly aware of the unique nuance of time and place and how
Cheng causes those aspects of the story to be as essential as the
actual characters of the book. Cheng’s crime was that she was
born into a wealthy, land-owning Chinese family. As a result of
her “privileged” background, she was put into solitary
confinement and ordered by Red Guards to confess to the crimes
they had trumped up against her. Quite simply and without much
fanfare . . . she refused. Throughout the book, the reader sees
the honesty, intelligence, and perseverance of one woman in the
face of horrific torture and oppression. Bibliography lists only
the primary source.

One Aspect of Morgan Stanley's Investment Risk in China
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing Morgan Stanley's first-ever joint venture, and one in which the investment bank in which the company was a partner lost money on telecommunications infrastructure investing in China. Much of the loss incurred later was traced to bribery. Associated risks could have been eliminated from the telecommunications scenario and preserved at least some return for investors. Staunch refusal would have delayed the telecommunications projects in the short term, but those delays likely would have cost less than did the bribes that were paid to effect their completion.
