The Korean War & Truman's Seizure Of US Steel Mills
[ send me this paper ]
A 25 page research paper. The 1952 Supreme Court case of Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v Sawyer 343 U.S. 579 circumscribed the powers of the presidency for one of the few times in the history of the United States. Citing both the fragility of the national economy and the needs of the fighting troops of the Korean War, President Harry Truman seized most of the country's steel mills in an effort to avert a steelworkers' strike that could have put troops in active warfare in even more danger stemming from a lack of necessary machinery and materiel. Strikes were commonplace in 1952 when the Supreme Court determined that Truman had overstepped the bounds provided for the presidency by the framers of the Constitution. Other factors were at play, however, and it appears that not all of them were taken into account by the Court. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

A Study of Five Terrorist Groups: The Action Directe, the North Korean Communist Group, the Islamic Jamiat-i-Talaba, the Dashmesh Regiment, and the Red Army Fraction/Baader Meinhof Group
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 30 page paper studying five terrorist groups: their history, ideology, acts of terrorism and current status. The study of five terrorist groups, the Action Directe (AD), the North Korean Communist Group, the Islamic Jamiat-i-Talaba (IJT), the Dashmesh Regiment, and the Red Army Fraction (RAF) shows the extent extremists will go to further their causes in both the domestic and international arena. The Action Directe (AD) in France and the Red Army Fraction (RAF) in Germany were mostly active in the 1970s and 1980s when many of their leading members were imprisoned. Although not directly linked with any recent terrorist actions, the members of the AD and RAF are still actively associated with radical or political groups today. The North Korean Communist Group is considered one of the most viable terrorist threats of today as they are large, well-funded, still torture political prisoners and are believed to still manufacture nuclear, chemical and biological weaponry contrary to international agreements. The Islamic Jamiat-i-Talaba (IJT) as the student based affiliated of the political party Jamiat-i-Islami (JI) in Pakistan wish for the education of Islamic youth and for the formation of an Islamic state free of all Western deviant and capitalist influences and continue violent protests to promote this ideal. The recent war on terrorism against the Taliban in Afghanistan has led the IJT to believe that the increase in martyrs for their cause will only increase their recruitment for their group. Finally, the Dashmesh Regiment or 10th Regiment in Pakistan and India wish for a separate Sikh state called Khalistan which is currently on land in India. They have formed alliances with other national and international terrorist groups with the intent of getting their cause well known and have been responsible for several international acts of terrorism. Although their group was diminished when the Indian forces captured many of their leaders, international Sikh supported organizations have been formed in their place to continue their cause.

This is a 5 page paper comparing the immigrant communities of South Koreans and Vietnamese within Canada. The communities of South Korean and Vietnamese immigrants are vastly different in their history, culture and reasons for coming to Canada but have nevertheless experienced some of the same influences within Western society and aspects of assimilation and integration. Since a relationship was established with South Korea in the early 1960s, South Korean immigrants have been moving to Canada and live mainly in the urban areas of Toronto and Vancouver. Several Consulate Generals for the Republic of Korea (South Korea) have been established throughout Canada providing representation and aid to South Koreans within Canada. The South Korean community in Toronto has greatly influenced the culture in that city although the youth within the population have expressed a desire to fully assimilate as Westerners. Similarly, the large Vietnamese communities in the urban cities in Canada have a good official representation with over 15 member communities with a Vietnamese Canadian Federation. This federation hopes that the Vietnamese youths balance their cultural origins within their new Canadian lifestyles and while the census has recorded trends of assimilation despite this hope, stories of Vietnamese Canadians provide accounts of how many of them have incorporated their Vietnamese culture into their Western lives.

South Korea and Taiwan have slowly progressed towards becoming countries with high industrialization and have become significant players on the world markets. Within each country however exists slightly different aspects of employment and labor relations which have led to the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of their employees. In South Korea, labor struggles exist between the state, the family run conglomerates called chaebols and the labor unions. Although South Korea provides competitive employee packages, the conflict between the three groups has led to a recent general strike and relations were further inflamed in 1996 when the government passed legislation which would allow more strength on the behalf of the employers not the workers. Taiwan, on the other hand also has family run businesses and labor unions but the states participation is a large aspect of their employment relations and industrial success. Because of this cooperation between the three groups within the employment sector, the workers in Taiwan are provided with education, health and social services as well as enjoying some of the most competitive salaries and benefits in Asia and employment relations remain positive.
