The ID chips were designed in an effort to address anti theft and anti fraud concerns, and the growing security issues surrounding e-commerce. There's been so much uproar over the potential for privacy infringement that Intel says it will provide software for users to mm off the serial number. The concern about privacy is real, though it may be being blown out of proportion. Intel has not dealt directly with the problem and seems intent on maintaining it's position that the chip can be disabled sufficiently with the software they provide. As of yet, they have not addressed the concerns that another program could re-activate the system and, or, it is completely disabled by their software.
