Advertising and Gender Roles
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. It is nearly
impossible to escape gender stereotypes, for they exist all
throughout society. Advertisers especially seem to draw upon
assumptions about male and female roles. Such intolerance has
even been experienced from one's own significant other. From
where do such harmful and often distorted images originate, and
why have they not decreased over the past several decades? If
one considers the fact that each person is a product of his own
environment, it is easy to see that the influence of his
surroundings is critical to forming his gender image. Attitudes
are spread from generation to generation, community to community
and person to person; there is virtually no way to avoid becoming
tainted in a society that harbors negative or pre-formed
stereotypes. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
