Journalism And The War In Iraq: Absence Of Integrity And Humanity
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. For as long as man has been on planet Earth, he has faced a tremendous struggle between right and wrong; as history readily illustrates, his behavior has too often reflected a poor choice of direction where these two entities are concerned. Now in the twenty-first century, humanity continues to struggle with the same ethical dilemma of centuries ago: Where, if at all, is the line drawn between seeking personal gain at the expense of the masses? Indeed, this quandary appears to have little impact upon those journalists who report back on events of the Iraqi war, choosing instead to reach for the flashiest, most sensational profiles of courage and completely omitting some of the most valuable – albeit unexciting from a reporter's perspective – casualties of war: The innocent Iraqi citizens caught in harm's way. Language & Reality
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay/research paper that discusses the relationship between language, societal constructs and reality. Since the time of ancient Greece, people have contemplated the nature of reality. As Berger and Luckmann point out in their treatise on the nature of reality, what is referred to as reality is basically unknowable except through the narrow channel of human experience as we each interpret it through the facility of our own particular social enclaves and institutions. In other words, reality, rather than being concrete and immutable, is also subjective, that is, subject to change in accordance with the manner in which it is perceived. These ideas are discussed. Languages are becoming extinct at far greater ratios than are mammals and birds. This essay provides a look at global immigration patterns with data; a discussion of endangered languages; a discussion of language as a unifying element in culture as well as a barrier to communication; and the possibility of a universal language and what that might be. Liberal Bias of the Media: Truth or Fiction
[ send me this paper ]
(24 pp) Liberal media bias - of course you think
to yourself - what else is new? Journalists
refute that thought - the majority of times
claiming that they have personal liberal
perspectives, but that they can separate those
from their professional writing, approach and
credulity. What if there really is minimal
"liberal media bias," what if "they" -whoever
they may be-if they exist at all-- are using a
propaganda technique of distraction, as a smoke
screen ? or research based paranoia?

Liquor Industry Adherent Self-Regulation: Must Rule Advertisements In All Forms Of Mass Media
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. Through the years, a distinctive trend has been established with regard to the various methods advertisers employ in order to outshine the competition. Some of these practices are looked upon as being instrumental within such a cutthroat environment; others, however, are viewed as inappropriate and unacceptable. In spite of the fact that the broadcast media are the focal points for such a vast array of advertising techniques, they do not reserve the right to censor public consumption. Some believe that imparting television and radio executives with the power to control the flow of advertising is no different than censoring the inherent freedom of the press. Advertisers have the right to sell their products in whatever manner is most effective; in fact, that is the entire essence behind the free enterprise: that each business has the constitutional right to align whatever components are necessary to make it stand out above its competitors. There is no law in the land that can prohibit advertisers from portraying their products in the most advantageous light possible; it is up to the broadcast media to respect this concept of freedom of speech. It is an unusual occurrence, but entire industries do sometimes regulate their own advertising if it is established that the message being presented is contradictory to societal norm, and the liquor industry is a prime example. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Mass Media & How People Think
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page research paper that examines the mass news media and its influence. The new media is enormously powerful, as it provides the main conduit through which the public learns of the state of current events. Research demonstrates that often journalism does not provide the public with sufficient background information to thoroughly understand a news event. The emphasis is on sensationalism and drama rather than on information content. Sociological, political and psychological research demonstrates both the relevancy and power of the mass media--where strengths exist, but primarily where its foibles lie. [ send me this paper ]
(7 pp) Almost all of us are affected by mass media
in one form or other: films, television, radio,
music and music videos, magazines and other print
media, and now, the internet. We delude our

media: it comes in with the oxygen and leaves with
the Co2. Yet of all those under the "spell" of
the media, it appears that adolescent girls are
the most vulnerable. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Mass Media for Entertainment and Pleasure with Examples from British History
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing mass media for pleasure and entertainment with examples from British history. Mass media in relation to today’s society has a great many formats in which to give the public information, promotion of new merchandise, news, entertainment and various forms of pleasure in the world of television, journalism, films, computer games and the internet to name a few. Traditionally, media was thought to be a source of viable information to the masses yet history shows that media was also used as much for the pleasure and entertainment of the masses as it was to provide information about current, world or political events. In today’s newspapers, although seemingly filled with violent news, they are also filled with “feel good” stories, entertainment sections, film and literary reviews as well as the classic comic, jumble and crossword features. In the Victorian era, the mass media were the providers of scandals and serial novels highly popular in that time.

Media Access: National Security Versus Public Access To Government Function
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. National security is maintained at myriad different levels and under countless different provisions so as to weigh the intrinsic risk associated with each individual perceived threat. When it comes to military tribunals and media access, a strong undercurrent of First Amendment rights versus the threat to national security fuels an ongoing legal debate between the press and federal judges (Anonymous, 2001). The extent to which these secret courts serve to protect against highly sensitive information leaking out through media sources is both grand and far-reaching; that certain cases have reached beyond the concern for protecting national security and granted media access in these hearings speaks to the failing efforts to balance interests of national security with public access. Bibliography lists 25 sources.
