Interactive Media in Education and the Importance of Teacher Mediation

Interactive media in the educational environment has provided some exciting opportunities for teachers and students in regards to flexibility of course study and distance education. Interactive media is now not only used within the traditional classroom setting but is also used as supplements in programs for students who have learning disabilities or are considered at-risk and have not benefited from the traditional system. Despite this newfound resource however, research has demonstrated that many students do not benefit from interactive media education and some become lost or disoriented with the new medium. In addition, in all cases studied it has been found that all students benefit more from interactive media only if it is balanced with teacher mediation and instructor advisement. Although students and teachers see the benefit of the additional resources available through interactive media, it is not seen as effective as the primary source for education unless applied within the balance of effective teacher-student interaction, student-student interaction and student-material interaction.
