Assistive Technology in Education
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page discussion of the importance of incorporating assistive technology for special needs students. Special education students require certain considerations if they are to advance to the best of their capabilities. An extremely important factor in preparing these students to take productive roles in society is the integration of assistive technology into the classroom. This integration is critical not only from the perspective that it allows a student to reach their full academic potential but also in the fact that it serves to acquaint students with the existence and value of such technology so that they can seek to make it a part of their non-academic lives as well. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Augmentative Communication For Autistic Students
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Autistic people are unable to communicate in the same ways that society expects one to communicate, inasmuch as their thought processes do not follow the same logical progression as others. Because of this severe limitation, it is imperative that an autistic individual expresses his or herself through augmentative methods – object communication -- such as photographs, drawings, pictograms and gestures. With the ability to express oneself in the typically accepted manner extremely difficult, the autistic person can more readily point, nod and acknowledge augmented methods as a means by which to make others understand their needs. Beginning SEI Approaches
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page research paper on Structured English Immersion (SEI), which is a methodology for teaching Second Language Learners (ESLs) in which instruction is designed to be at the "learner's readiness level," with teachers speaking in English between 70 and 90 percent of the time (Rodriguez and Higgins, 2005, p. 236). Baker (1998) points out that SEI is not the equivalent of an All-English approach, as the students' native language is used to a limited extent. Supporters of SEI assert that students are capable of learning "English and non-language subjects taught in English" at a desirable level of assimilation simultaneously (Rodriguez and Higgins, 2005). This examination of SEI instruction describes three approaches that are applicable to the needs of beginning students. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Bernstein's Argument: Effective In Explaining Racial-Ethnic Inequality In Academic Achievement
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. Basil Bernstein's argument provides a fundamental understanding why certain races have historically had great difficultly academically assimilating into white schools. The extent to which Bernstein's argument addresses how variable aspects of speech are derived from cultural background is both grand and far-reaching; that students of different ethnic heritage have learned speech codes cultivated from their ancestors speaks to the prevalence of linguistic misinterpretation in a classroom where the student has not been taught to understand the common language. Bottge's ' Reconceptualizing Mathematics Problem Solving For Low Achieving Students' - Summary
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Learning theories are not merely a collection of arbitrary approaches for acquiring knowledge but rather are well-focused methods for reaching students. People cannot be lumped together as being a single entity when it comes to learning processes; borrowing from such renown scholars as Dewey, Wertheimer and Bruner, Bottge (2001) points out how 'the notion that problems must be engaging for students' (p. 102) is not a new concept. In order to penetrate the limitations inherent to low achieving students where mathematical comprehension is concerned, Bottge (2001) expounds upon the need to incorporate student autonomy and quality of life into the fundamental approach to learning. Brainstorming As Pre-Reading Exercise In ESL Classrooms
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper. One of the many challenges the teacher faces when teaching non-English speaking students reading skills is context. This paper explains the brainstorming technique and the reasons for using it. Examples are also included. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Brantlinger's "Dividing Classes: How The Middle Class Negotiates And Justifies School Advantage" - Reflective
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Struggling within a society where class structure is all-important to one's social standing is difficult enough for adults who work hard to assimilate into communities otherwise segregated by economic barriers; however, children have long been the unwitting victims of such social stratification by way of an unjust educational system manipulated by and for the middle class. The extent to which Ellen A. Brantlinger's book entitled Dividing Classes: How the Middle Class Negotiates and Justifies School Advantage pointedly addresses the socioeconomic injustice of caste influence upon academic achievement is both grand and far-reaching; that such issues as standardized testing, vouchers and mainstreaming at-risk students epitomize the power of middle class influence speaks to an educational system that fails to provide for its minority populations. No additional sources cited.

Case Study: Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Education
[ send me this paper ]
11 pages in length. With the student teaching populations of primarily Hmong and Hispanic individuals, there are several issues to be addressed, not the least of which include stereotypical attitudes, gender discrimination and social class oppression. The young men are typically between seventeen and nineteen years of age and have had significant dealings with the law; as such, their attitudes toward education in particular and social structure in general do not reflect well within the classroom. The student's concern appears to be twofold: 1) abandoning her own ingrained stereotypical issues so that her attention is equally divided among the classroom and 2) addressing the school's distasteful practice of shuffling otherwise unqualified individuals through the system as a means by which to obtain grant funds. The bigger picture, however, is assessing the importance and quality of education within America's school system, inasmuch as special education programs, such as the one in which the student is involved, tend to turn the instructor into more of a glorified baby sitter than one who imparts knowledge. The writer discusses social and economic oppression as they relate to furthered education. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
