Dwight Eisenhower's "Military-Industrial Complex" Warning
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page paper relating this former president's 1961 warning to current nursing practice. "See your doctor." "Ask your doctor about ____ and if it's right for you." So go pharmaceutical companies' advertising directly to consumers who cannot directly purchase their products. As health care costs continue to spiral despite efforts to contain the rate of increase, pharmaceutical companies spend millions on advertising to those powerless to purchase the prescription drugs they tout. This appears to be a symptom of the "military-industrial complex" that Dwight Eisenhower warned against on leaving office in 1961. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Early Feeding After Colon Rectal Surgery
[ send me this paper ]
A 16 page paper. Historically, it has been believed that early oral feeding following colon rectal surgery is not possible. Instead, the traditional protocol is to withhold oral feeding until the resolution of ileus. These beliefs are based on practices that are more than 100 years old. Science has come a long way since then. This essay reviews five separate journal articles that report outcomes and results of early feeding protocols, including one that presented a review of the literature. Filename: KSnursEduAs.rtf

Education Needs Assessment: Use of Restraints
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing the need for an in-house short course program addressing the use of physical and chemical restraints of elderly nursing home residents. Restraints are notorious for being misused; what is discussed less in the popular press is the benefit that they can provide. The purpose of such restraints is to prevent injury stemming from patients’ attempts to do something for which they need assistance. The use of restraints both supports and contradicts the ethical principles of autonomy and beneficence, and an in-service refresher can serve to reconcile that contradiction. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Effects of Stress
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper that examines stress. Stress experience exists for “all human beings in all ages in varying degrees” (Lunney, 2006). It can be positive or negative producing both positive and negative effects. What is thought of as “stress” in the public mindset is actually stress overload, that is, which is what occurs when negative stressors become excessive. As established by Selye in the 1950s, this can produce “fight-or-flight response,” which if prolonged can lead to psychological and/or physical illness (Lunney, 2006). As this suggests, this topic is of particular interest to nursing because excessive stress has become so pervasive in contemporary society. Examination of literature pertaining to excessive stress reveals the physiological mechanisms that are triggered by stress, their effects both physically and psychologically, as well as suggests nursing interventions. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Ehrenreich And English's "Witches, Midwives, And Nurses: A History Of Women Healers"
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The topic of this book evokes a sense of patriarchal control and unmitigated ignorance with regard to the 'science' of medicine and how it has evolved during the past few hundred years. Women's contributions, disregarded and shunned until very recently, have historically been overshadowed by oppressive patriarchal perspectives; by chronicling the events that have occurred throughout the centuries in relation to women and the medical community, Ehrenreich and English help to illustrate just how despotic the entire male-based medical profession has been, particularly in light of the unpleasant legacy left by the witch hunts of old. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Elderly Patients/Loss of Independence
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page research paper that investigates this topic. While safety is a consideration for all patients, it is a particularly intense consideration in regards to when an elderly patient is hospitalized. Elderly patients who have previously been active can resist the loss of their independence and have trouble accepting a new reduced level of activity while hospitalized. Furthermore, an elderly patient may become confused in new surroundings and this may acerbate the tendency to wander or try to maintain their usual degree of independence. This can be inherently dangerous. An elderly patient who attempts to climb out of hospital bed with the bed rails raised can become entrapped and injured. Filename: KSnursHIPAAnurs.rtf

Elements of Psychiatric Nursing Practice
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page research paper that draws on the nursing model of Hildegarde Peplau, as she is acknowledged to be one of nursing's leading theorists, as she was one of the first to emphasize the importance of the nurse/patient relationship. Peplau's model specifies three phrases in this relationship: orientation (meeting the patient, establishing a relationship), exploitation (the patient takes advantage of the nurse's expertise) and termination (discharge plan is initiated). When Peplau formulated her model of psychiatric nursing, Interpersonal Relations in Nursing, the routines of mental institutes tended to reinforce illness (Sills, 1999). Peplau taught nurses to nurture mental health, to conduct research and seek methods for interrupting the illness maintenance systems (Sills, 1999). This examination of psychiatric nursing practice looks briefly at research literature in order to demonstrate how Peplau's model remains applicable today. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Emergency Response Disaster Management
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page paper discussing issues surrounding emergency response as it relates to disaster management. The paper discusses emergency response resulting from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, but it also discusses events such as Hurricane Fran in 1996, centering on the coast of North Carolina where the category 3 storm made landfall. The key to effective emergency response - excluding the training that can be seen as being a constant value – lies in the quality of communication between diverse teams and agencies responding to the event that has generated a crisis. The purpose here is to address two primary questions: “Are emergency responders equipped to communicate with others outside of their departments in time of crisis? [and] What are strategies to improve communications?” The paper concludes that emergency response in urban areas is highly effective, but that the same efforts in rural areas can be hindered by communication deficiencies. Bibliography lists 11 sources. A companion 16-slide Power Point presentation is available.

Enteral-Nasogastric Feeding in Children
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page paper discussing enteral-nasogastric feeding of children and its ethical implications. Of course enteral feeding is good for the patient, but the fact is that sometimes it can cause harm. This is certainly contrary to the principle of non-maleficence, but it is in the spirit of trying to provide benefit to the patient. Though both can be seen as being present, it is the intention of beneficence rather than the possibility of harm that should guide the use of enteral feeding. Harvard-style bibliography lists 6 sources.
