Black Musical Hybrids.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) A hybrid of anything is the offspring of
"genetically differing parents;" or one of "mixed
origin or composition." For a change Mr. Webster
is not too far off. A musical hybrid, then has a
similar definition, a musical "child" of different
parents. In this discussion we will examine some
of those musical hybrids as well as looking at what
influenced their development. People may not know
about the "art" element of African American music,
but that's true of the society at large. Classical
music, in general, has nothing to do with the listening habits of the average American. When you combine that indifference with separatism or racism, no wonder the African American share of performances or broadcasts is considerably smaller.
Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Bob Dylan -- the Social and Musical Evolution of Folk Music to
Folk-Rock
[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses singer and songwriter
Bob Dylan and is role as one of the major figures in American
folk and rock music. It is important to understand that Dylan

political, and ideological change in the United States. One
critic wrote in 1998 that: Bob Dylan couldn't wait for the music
to change. He couldn't be only part of the change. He was the
change itself. Unlike other songwriters who voiced their politics
through their music, Dylan garnered widespread popularity as his
words seemed to echo the sentiments of teens of thousands of
thousands of the young rebels of the 1960s. He was thought of
as both a musical and political visionary and apparently viewed
himself in equally epic proportions. Bibliography lists 8
sources.

Charles Mingus Autobiography -- Beneath the Underdog
[ send me this paper ]
His
World As Composed by Mingus: This 5 page report discusses the
autobiography of jazz musician Charles Mingus. Mingus takes many
unexpected turns and strange detours in telling his life story,
just as he did in telling his musical interpretations. His
telling bends and molds facts to his own purposes as if they too
were musical notes. The book makes the reader feel like a
voyeur peering into a great mind that had the capacity to blend
impulsiveness, fantasy, fact, and craziness into one package in
almost equal amounts. The end result blurs the lines of what is
real or not but the book makes it clear that for Mingus, at the
moment of his telling it, it was real enough. No secondary
sources.

Charlie Parkers Lady Be Good Compared with Miles Davis
Boplicity
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses Charlie Yardbird
Parker and Miles Davis who were (and still are), inarguably, two
of the greatest performers, composers, and innovators that the
American jazz world has ever experienced. Charlie Parker and his
alto saxophone are considered hallmarks of the original bebop,
even though the music he played repeatedly demonstrated that this
was a musician following his instincts and not necessarily
attempting to create or define any particular style. Likewise,
Miles Davis created a musical realm like nothing ever before
heard and like Bird, Miles unashamedly and unhesitatingly did it
his way. Miles Davis played an important part in the early stages
of the progressive, or cool jazz that dominated the jazz scene
in the early 1950s. This report compares two of their works. No
bibliography.

The Romantic and Impressionist eras in music history are quite different in their repertoires. Chopin, Pianist & Teacher
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper that focuses on the career of Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), who was one of the romantic eras most original composers, as his musical idiom was unlike any other (Machlis 84). Furthermore, he was the only major composer of this era whose genius was completely centered on the piano, as Chopins imagination was wedded to the keyboard and he created his universe within that narrow frame (Machlis 84). This examination of Chopin as a pianist and as a teacher demonstrates the extraordinary influence that his life and career had on subsequent generations of composers, but particularly within the realm of the piano.
