Campaign Finance Reform
[ send me this paper ]
(5pp). In 1974 Congress passed a set of laws that changed the amount of money which could be donated to an individual campaign. Contributions to candidates are now limited to $1,000, per contributor, that's called hard money. But of course many people and organizations, including special interest groups such as defense contractors, the gambling industry, organized labor have more money that they would like to spend on politics than they can get to candidates in $1,000 increments. So they give much larger amounts to advocacy groups, political action committees and the political party. That is called soft money. Not much else has happened in the last 25 years of discussion. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Chicago Mayor R. J. Daley
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Richard J. Daley held Chicago's mayoral position from 1955 to 1976 and remains one of the windy city's most famous elected officials to date. While this distinction has earned him a place within the annals of Chicago's history, the manner by which Daley approached his mayoral tasks has long been considered less than equitable to all racial and ethnic groups. The difference of fifty years is clearly illustrated by the way that blacks accommodated to Chicago politics during the 1950s, whereas Chicago politics had to ultimately accommodate to blacks during the 1970s. Clearly, the social aspect represented the greater significance in Chicago's development under Daley's reign. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Crime and Campaign Promises
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing the dichotomy between campaign promises relating to crime and actual observed results. We expect political candidates to lay out for us the reasons we should vote for them rather than for their opponents, and candidates oblige this expectation by making promises during their campaigns outlining the things they will do once they gain office. There will be reform, they promise. Things will be different. They will take some sort of stance against crime. Too often, these promises are made for the purpose of gaining votes rather than truly making a difference. In the end, the most effective law and order campaigns have been those that have come about without any direct influence on the part of newly-elected officials at any level of government. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Cybervoting: Good Or Bad
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The technological revolution has brought about myriad social changes, not the least of which includes the concept of cybervoting. In its purest form, this alternative to physical ballot voting stands to revolutionize the entire democratic process; according to proponents, cybervoting will give back to the people what has long been gone from the political process. Additionally, the implementation of cybervoting will benefit individuals who might not otherwise make the effort to vote, inevitably increasing the ultimate turnout. That cybervoting stands to get more people involved with the political process is reason enough to support its acceptance; however, there are even more fundamental reasons why cybervoting is an idea whose time has arrived. Democrat Ads 2000: A Marxist, Semiological, Feminist, and Psychoanalytical Critique
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the power of advertising. Proclaims that advertising is really aggressive capitalist attack seeking to persuade the mindless millions which live among us to buy a particular product. The product itself can take a variety of forms, from the latest toy to the most high tech gadget for your kitchen. Even more concerning, however, is when the product being sold by advertising is political ideology. Did the Germans Who Voted for Hitler Realize that They were Voting for War and Mass Murder?
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 9 page paper discussing the campaigns of Hitler and the Nazi party in regards to the party holding the majority in the 1932 and 1933 elections. Were the Germans aware of his eventual intentions? Adolph Hitler (1889-1945) was the Nazi party leader in Germany from 1919-1945, eventually becoming Chancellor from 1933-1945. The history of the events which happened under the Hitler regime before and during World War II in regards to his occupation and declaration of war on the countries in Europe and his mass murder of the Jews among others have become well known and have horrified many around the globe. One of the most common questions in regards to Hitler’s rise to fame is “how did free and fair democratic elections lead to the extraordinarily anti-democratic Nazi Party winning control of the Weimar Republic” and did the Germans voting for Hitler realize his future plans for war and mass murder during the time of the elections? (King, Rosen, Tanner & Wagner, 2002). In retrospect it seems unbelievable that the Nazi Party could have gained power in a democratic regime, however based on the momentum of the popularity of the Nazi Party from 1919 to 1930, and the dire economic conditions of Germany at the time, it is quite possible that the Germans who voted for Hitler and the Nazi Party were doing so more for the future of the economy and strength of Germany without realizing the extent to which Hitler would push the limits of his own power and that of the Nazi Party. While some may argue that his intentions were well documented in his book “Mein Kampf” published in 1925, the book was not popular nor well read until after Hitler became Chancellor of Germany and Hitler’s final push in the 1932 and 1933 elections centered on unity, economic stability, employment, business opportunities, expansion of the military in addition to the promotion of nationalism; factors more so prominent in the minds of the Germans during the Depression. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
