President Bush: Popularity Before And After September 11th
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. It is quite amazing the impact a singular event can have upon the face of history, particularly when that event is as politically and socially catastrophic as the September 11th terrorist attacks. This date marked the day when many things changed for many people with regard to personal issues and concerted fears of national safety. Something else changed that day, however, that marked yet another monumental by-product of the terrorist attacks that forever altered America's support for its president. Indeed, September 11th is now known as the turning point in George W. Bush's presidential career, inasmuch as his approval rating soared in alliance with his defiant dedication to supporting his American constituency in this time of great trouble. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
Filename: TLCBshOp.rtf

President Carter, US-Soviet Relations And The Eventual Fall Of The Soviet Union
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The evolution of President Carter's policies regarding US-Soviet relations and human rights indicates he made a fundamental reevaluation of US policy and approach to the Soviets. This change in policy direction lead to the course of events that eventually caused the fall of the Soviet Union. Historically, foreign policy has typically reflected an attempt to coexist within the boundaries of civilized reality; however, the divided interpretations of what civilized reality truly means have often clouded the very essence behind the concept of foreign policy. When the established policy does not provide for friendly relations, the only alternative arrangement finds that the parties involved are struggling to overpower each other in an attempt to either acquire or maintain political superiority. President Carter did not care for this acrimonious approach to foreign relations and did his part to hold "other countries to the highest standard possible, a standard by which, he believed, Americans would want themselves to be judged" (Anonymous, 2002). Bibliography lists 13 sources.
Filename: TLCCartr.rtf

President Gerald Ford: Legislative Agenda And Relationship With The Courts
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. United States President Gerald R. Ford had what might be called a tentative relationship with the courts due to his oft-unpopular legislative agenda, much of which was directly attributable to the Vietnam War and President Richard M. Nixon's pardon. However, even as opposing as their relationship may have been in relation to these issues, there was numerous legislation borne out of a mutual understanding and agreement. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
Filename: TLCGFord.rtf

President Harry S. Truman - Domestic Programs
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page research paper that discusses the domestic programs proposed by President Truman. "When modern-day historians rank Truman, they place him among the top ten presidents, and some have him just below FDR, Lincoln, and George Washington." Why is this when more of Truman's programs were rejected by Congress than programs accepted and approved. Truman took office at a time when this nation was facing serious challenges. His Fair Deal, which included 21 programs, was mostly rejected by Congress but Truman began a path of values and institutions that every subsequent president has followed. This essay discusses these issues. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

This analysis of US presidential government as compared to Great Britain's parliamentary system reveals these differences, particularly in regards to the current US president, George W. While comparisons often reveal that one system works better than another, in this case, this analysis will show that the democratic systems of governance chosen by the US and Great Britain are well suited to their country's individual needs. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

A 15 page outline of the many factors which affect presidential power. The author contends that the President has neither too much power no too little. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
Filename: PPpresPw.rtf

Presidential Reconstruction/Congressional Plans: 1865-1877
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Defining the relationships that existed between and among government, politics, democracy and power in the mid-1800s was a task that drew its conclusion upon a very fine line. Indeed, while all four of these entities had something significant to do with one another, at the same time they each possessed their own particular arrangement within the wide and varied scheme of bureaucratic function. The writer discusses the elements that played an integral role in the modification of the presidential reconstruction. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Presidential Responses To Domestic Economic Conflicts: Impact Upon Popularity
[ send me this paper ]
16 pages in length. The primary objective of any presidency is not to make critical decisions based upon popular opinion, but rather to enact policy based upon the betterment of the nation as a whole, a task that is inherently marred with unpopular public opinion no matter how beneficial it may be. However, there is a fine line between disagreeing with a president's policy and opposing it to such a degree that it changes the foundation upon which that president is popular with his constituency. Two American presidents who experienced this ever-seesawing approval rating did so because of their respective approaches to domestic economic conflict; Hoover suffered the wrath of an angry public, while FDR basked in the glory of an adoring nation. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
Filename: TLCPresResp.rtf

Presidential Slogans and Campaigns
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages. Presidential campaign slogans began with the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828 and his nickname 'Old Hickory.' While visual media did not create that campaign at the time, today we find that the media has more and more to do with the creation of certain slogans and images within presidential campaigns. Much like advertising, these slogans help keep an image in the public eye, and by bombarding us with this image over and over, it is hoped that we will become impacted by this image to the exclusion of all others. This type of advertising ploy is used in everything from products to political campaigns, but the emphasis in this paper is on the presidential campaigns, particularly those on campaigns since 1960. A comparison of several campaigns is included in this interesting outlook, as well as how a campaign slogan can oftentimes be the tiebreaker in the mind of a voter. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Presidents: Plus and Minus.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Although our assignment said to write about the best and worst Presidents of the United States, it seemed that once someone finally did get elected, that they did have some qualities that would indicate, they were probably sharper than most pencils in the box, I am thinking about them in a plus and minus category. This would indicate that the minus president fell below, what was normal for the office and the positive president moved above what was "normal" for the office. Although some of the "measuring" has also been determined by what history has given each of these men as a political stage, or the events that occurred while they were in office, I tried to look for qualities that would show how they reacted to the events that they were given. Bibliography lists 1 source

Life as President of the United States is one of the most scrutinizing careers there could be. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
Filename: JGAoval.rtf

Reagan
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper that discusses the book “Reagan,” by Lou Cannon. Cannon has written two books about former President Reagan, this being the first, written while Reagan was still in office. We examine how Cannon portrays Reagan, which is in a manner that illustrates a unique character that somehow existed in a fantasy world in many ways. He was a unique man and Cannon illustrates this in a very unbiased manner. Cannon merely presents the reader with the incidents and realities that involved this man while he was in office. A very enlightening book for anyone interested in looking at one of the most unique presidents of our time. No additional sources cited.

Rhetorical Analysis/Bush's Speech of 9/11/02
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that summarizes, discusses and analyzes the rhetorical strategies that President George W. Bush used in his speech of 9/11/02, the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the country in 2001. The writer argues that the speech is grounded in the extreme emotions generated by the attacks of 9/11. Using this as a foundation, President Bush endeavors to stir up patriotic feeling, mixed with feelings of outrage and sorrow, against an enemy that is pictured as not like "the rest of us" who believe in the sanctity of life, but rather as people who are inhuman and evil. In so doing, he copies a strategy that has been employed by leaders in every war, in every century, because it is only by looking at one's enemy as "other" that people can bring themselves to attack fellow human beings. No additional sources cited.

RICHARD NIXON
[ send me this paper ]

Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Richard Nixon And Watergate: Turning Point
[ send me this paper ]
11 pages in length. Watergate proved to be the most significant turning point in the life of America's thirty-seventh president, Richard M. Nixon, as well as one of the significant turning points in American politics, as well. The scandal that took place in 1972 at Washington, D.C.'s Watergate apartment and office complex became the president's worst nightmare, inasmuch as he was caught virtually red-handed as the primary conspirator in the Democratic National Committee headquarters break-in. This infamous occurrence sparked an investigation that uncovered secretly made audio tapes of conversations that Nixon had with several top-positioned government employees attempting to secure Nixon's re-election by illegally – and unethically – infiltrating the opposition's home office. Indeed, Nixon's world came crashing down when the investigative trail lead directly to his authorization of such damning activity; it would take two years after this discovery for the president to resign in order to avoid being impeached. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Richard Russell & LBJ
[ send me this paper ]
An 18 page research paper that examines the question of whether or not Senator Richard B. Russell of Georgia, as Lyndon Johnson's mentor while LBJ was in the Senate had a significant influence over Johnson's handling of the Vietnam War. The writer argues that, in some ways, Russell was quite influential. However, examination of the historical record shows that, on the whole, Johnson followed other advisers more closely than he did Russell. Russell's advice, like the situation itself, was frequently ambiguous and did not offer Johnson a clear-cut path. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
Filename: khrbrlbj.rtf

Robert F. Kennedy’s Anti-war Legacy

Ronald Reagan / Effective Leadership
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. Much like his political predecessors Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan possessed a leadership quality that set him apart from a great many other leaders of this or any other time. The concept of leadership is easy to define, but it is not as easy to execute; Reagan was not only able to characteristically recognize the inherent demands of the job as Chief Executive of the United States, but he also rose to the challenge consistently and uniformly. The writer discusses the various points of effective leadership Reagan displayed while in office. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
Filename: Reaglead.wps

Ronald Reagan Campaign Communications
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper that begins with a brief introduction to Ronald Reagan. The writer then discusses the communication of each election campaign, demonstrating how messages were conveyed to the public. Reagan always spoke simply and clearly. He was a master at sending a simple message that had profound implications, like "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" About the Panama Canal controversy, he said: "We built it, we paid for it, it's ours, and we are going to keep it." This essay emphasizes image building and how the communication during the campaigns built that image. Numerous examples are included. The election results data are also included. Bibliography lists 16 sources.

Ronald Reagan: Speech Comparison
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. One of Ronald Reagan's many legacies is his ability to deliver a speech that inspires, educates and makes listeners feel as though he is talking directly to each one individually. His rapport with his constituency and the global community was comparable only to President Kennedy, and his smooth delivery is attributable to his first career as movie actor. Indeed, being president was but another role for Reagan to play, one in which he used oratory as a most effective means of persuasion. Examining two of his speeches - the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars) and the Berlin Wall (Tear Down this Wall!) - provides a good opportunity to evaluate the master and his craft that served to guide America for so many years. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
