Sex And/Or Scandal: How They Extend And Illuminate The Study Of Past Societies And Cultures
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Sex and scandal have existed synonymously throughout history, serving to extend and illuminate the study of past societies and cultures all the way back to ancient Greece. That the two work synergistically when paired and not necessarily in a positive manner speaks to the inherent connection between forbidden temptation and humanity's innate desires. Associating sex and scandal with the political world is no less commonplace than correlating the cohesive existence of alcohol and drugs: each respective element is inexplicably drawn to the other. To examine political sex scandals as limiting the overall accurate historical perspective of a given culture and/or society is to understand how a handful of political representatives do not necessarily reflect the higher moral integrity of their constituency. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Teddy Roosevelt and the Progressive Movement
[ send me this paper ]
(10 pp) Progressives were a loosely knit group of
activists, who occasionally even seemed opposed to
each other. According to Schulz (2000), while not
opposed to capitalism as a concept they did want
to change the relationship of labor to business.
Immigration was viewed as a 'problem.' Some felt
the solution was the 'Americanization' of
immigrants; others felt immigration should be
restricted by legislation. Private utilities and
transportation methods should have some
regulations; others felt the government should
straighten out 'the whole mess.' Political reform
was a necessity. Could it be done, by eliminating
the 'political machine,' or were there other
solutions? We might say that during this time the
country was beginning to 're-think' itself, and
looked for a leader who could either provide
answers or guidance. Teddy Roosevelt was just the
guy for the job!

The Appropriate Use Of A United States Presidential Pardon
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The powers inherent to America's highest political office are both grand and far-reaching to such an extent that decisions are made and policy is upheld that exists nowhere else. Inasmuch as upholding the office of United States president innately affords one the opportunity to wield certain power privileges as supported by the Constitution, one of these advantage as written in Article II, Section II of this historical document states how the president "shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment" (U.S. Constitution). According to Ashley M. Steiner's "Remission Of Guilt Or Removal Of Punishment? The Effects Of A Presidential Pardon," however, there is a great deal of concern over the reason presidential pardons existed in the first place. Was it included as a means by which to "blot out all guilt for a crime" (Steiner 959) or merely to "remove the punishment for the crime" (Steiner 959)? Either way, the historic perspective of presidential pardons both public and private has often been less than flattering. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
