Applying Popper to Educational Research
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper applying Karl Popper’s approach to the scientific method to educational research. There is a wealth of research in education, much of it virtually worthless. For decades, it seemed that researchers turned to qualitative methods only when they could not fit hypotheses into quantitative approaches, and qualitative studies frequently were not designed well with reference to validity and reliability. The result was that method purists often regarded qualitative educational research as less than “real” science. Today’s educational research is designed much better than in the past. It still could benefit from the application of Karl Popper’s approach to the scientific method, however, which approaches validity and theory verification from a different perspective. Arguments For And Against English Only Laws In The United States
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. The debate over whether English-only laws will actually help or hinder the issues of social and cultural determinism is one that has both sides in an uproar. A number of recent events and protests have made it clear that there exists a distinct dividing line with regard to the inherent benefits of a bilingual American society. Not only is this concept a hot potato within the ethnic community, but it has also served to touch upon a raw nerve with the general public, as well. No bibliography.

Arguments Opposing Illegal Immigration
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper opposing illegal immigration. Arguing against illegal immigration is difficult because the very stance raises the ire of well-meaning liberals and offends the sensibilities of many who are far more conservative. Further, those of us who are not of 100 percent Native American heritage are products of immigration ourselves. These difficulties do nothing to alter the facts of illegal immigration, however. Citizens and structures are not prepared for such high numbers of individuals, and the effect is that our judicial system, labor markets and social support systems are overwhelmed. The US needs to establish and enforce immigration control measures, welcoming most but maintaining control of when they arrive and how they survive once they are across the border. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
Filename: KSsocIllegalImm.rtf

Article Summary & Critique
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Scaramella et al's (2008) study underscores a critical component of developmental behavior in children that has historically lacked solid backing of scientific research. The authors illustrate the interconnectivity between generational influence and harsh parenting induced by the impact of socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds - rather than parents' education level as originally thought - that manifest in externalizing problems in toddlers. A particularly consistent finding of this study is how the combination of poverty and early parenthood equate to a higher incidence of harsh parenting inasmuch as this scenario is associated with greater hostility and less nurturing. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Articulations of Race
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper/essay that explores the debates between essentialist and instrumentalist conceptualizations in regards to classes and nations and race (Dufour). Basically, essentialism is the belief that specific categories of entities will share a specific set of characteristics, which can be viewed as their “essence.” Contemporary proponents of identity politics oppose essentialism and consider that ethnicity, rather than consisting of fixed traits is a social construct. Aspects of an Ideal Society Using Key Elements from Ancient and Modern Societies
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing elements of an ideal society based on those from ancient or modern day societies. Societies of Ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire and Modern Sweden are used to improve that currently in the United States. An outline is included. In creating an ideal society based on the aspects of the current society in the United States elements from past and present societies could be included as improvements. Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire provide good examples of more centralization in regards to political, economical and legal systems. In the United States currently, the voting system for federal, state and municipal elections allows for the a representative government headed by a majority party, yet the President may not in all cases be represented by that party as he or she is elected separately. This being the case, often legislative actions are stalled such as those currently involving healthcare. Health care is one of the major negative components in the United States today. An example of a good health care system comes from modern day Sweden where federal monies are dedicated to the mental, physical and social health of the population despite whatever economic recessions exist. In regards to education, the last recorded literacy rates in the United States were high suggesting that despite the current private and public education debate currently afflicting the United States, overall the U.S. has a good commitment to education and this commitment should continue to increase for an ideal society. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Assessing Patriot in Terms of Korematsu v. United States
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper assessing the Patriot Act in terms of the 1944 case Korematsu v. United States in which the Supreme Court upheld the relocation of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Though the provisions of Patriot and the conditions of Executive Order 9066 share many similarities, there is far less similarity in the perspective of 1944 and perspective today. Considered within the framework of the 1944 vantage, Patriot likely would be upheld by the Court.
