Psychology Research: Effect of Pre-Marriage Counseling on Length of Marriage
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper describing a quantitative study assessing whether pre-marital counseling positively affects length of marriage. Despite all of the attention that the problem of divorce receives, divorce rates continue to increase. Most couples do not undergo pre-marital counseling, which anecdotally is viewed as being beneficial in strengthening and preserving marriages. The hypothesis tested here is that couples who undergo pre-marital counseling remain married longer than those who do not; results of the empirical study support the hypothesis. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Psychosocial Functioning Of The Family
[ send me this paper ]
14 pages in length. Lisa was fed up with hiding the fact that she was a lesbian. While she was not quite sure how her family would react to such news, she had reached the end of her rope; no longer could she continue living a lie. If her mom and dad are not receptive to her sexual orientation,
she pondered, she was old enough to live on her own. To be sure, living in a house where homosexuality is a dirty word is no place for Lisa. Her brother, on the other hand, would
be openly accepting of her alternative lifestyle, inasmuch as he had always been the underdog who can relate to being different. Would that automatically brand her family as dysfunctional, even though her parents were pillars of the
community? On the outside, Lisa and her brother were always putting forth an image quite removed from their real selves as a means by which to uphold their parent's social representation. But now, thought Lisa, it was time for her to relinquish the deep-seated guilt associated with her
well-to-do white bread family and take back her own life. The writer discusses how her family reacts to the news, as well as how it impacts the family structure. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Public Cemeteries
[ send me this paper ]
A 28 page research paper that examines literature and discusses public cemeteries as an aspect of secular life, relate to the concept of the sacred. The writer argues that this is a particularly relevant area of discussion as there is evidence that the public mindset, in regards to the burial rituals, is currently evolving in new directions. There is also controversy in regards to the value of maintaining public cemeteries in the face of capitalistic concerns. In using the example of public cemeteries as an aspect of the sacred in secular life, this discussion will indicate how sociologists feel that the concept of the sacred functions within secular life, that is, its societal functions while contrasting it with the sacred within other social contexts. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

Public Perception Of Stepfamilies At The National Level
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The family structure has enough difficulties within the intolerance of contemporary society to have to also deal with the issue of stepparenting and blended families. Inherent to the added pressures of assimilating into someone else's familial composition is the external perception of how such families are supposed to work, with the public perspective often exacting undesirable and erroneous requirements upon those who so desperately try to adapt to such a new life. On the other hand, however, a greater component of public perception toward stepfamilies lends itself to a significantly more positive approach to this modern form of family structure, inasmuch as the high rate of divorce continues to bring two otherwise independent units together in order to create one. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

This situation brings up several pertinent questions, which this overview endeavors to address. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Questioning Our Beliefs: The Indubitable Nature of Foundationalism?
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page discussion of the role of questioning in shaping our society.
Examines foundationalism, the immovable and irrefutable cornerstones of
knowledge from which logical deductions can be formulated, and emphasizes that not only the positives of society such as religious beliefs and science are considered foundationalist but so are the more negative aspects of society such as disbelief in a divine power or even in the inherent nature of right and wrong. Turns to the classical
writings to support the emphasis that in order to grow and prosper we
must continually examine the consequences of our actions in terms of
societal welfare. Emphasizes that it is not enough to simply accept a

Race as a Social Construct Rather Than Biological Fact
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper examining the biological basis of racial categorization. There is little evidence of race as a physical and biological fact, but much evidence indeed for race as a purely social concept. One very biological fact is that we humans need to finds points of reference in everything in order to process information most efficiently. Our very mechanism of thinking and learning categorizes information, and there is no shame in categorizing people according to color—it is a physical characteristic readily discernible and requires no value judgment, though such is often superfluously attached. The shame is in elevating that need to categorize items to condone one group claiming superiority over another based on physical characteristics alone. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Race Relations
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Humanity has been enduring an ongoing battle for centuries: the strained relations among the races. Despite efforts to put the past behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that there still exists a strong sense of racial dissension. While many Caucasians do not see the problem being as severe as it is represented, African-Americans angrily reply that the lighter skinned race has not had to endure such prejudice and, therefore, cannot begin to identify with the situation. Similarly, Asians, Hispanics and other United States minorities believe they often receive unfair treatment because of their race. The writer discusses the various aspects of race relations and how they have changed over time. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
