Restrictions Should Be Placed On The Use Of Cellular Phones In Restaurants And Theaters
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. The quest for escape from the daily grind has long been found within the enjoyable venues of restaurants and movie theaters; after a relaxing evening of dinner and a movie, both mind and body have had a chance to regroup and prepare for another day full of responsibility. In this ever-connected global society, cellular phones are one of the most irritating distractions that sends people running for the refuge of restaurants and movie houses faster than anything else; however, these beeping, blinking annoyances - and the incessant chatter that ensues - have come to infiltrate these last few safe havens to the point where restrictions must be put in place not only to protect the integrity of restaurants and movie theaters but more importantly to afford patrons the distraction-free meal or film they came there to experience in the first place. No bibliography.

Retirement Adjustment Among Couples: Predictors of Well-Being
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page paper discussing all general aspects of adjusting to retirement. Citizens of most developed nations are not saving enough of their incomes to provide them with the retirement years enjoyed by those who retired in the 1980s and 1990s, and the economic conditions that existed then likely will not return. Those retiring now and within the next 15 years or so will find a landscape much different from that in which their own parents lived during their retirement years. The purpose here is to explore what new retirees may be able to expect and how they might adjust to circumstances. The paper addresses the need for psychological preparation for retirement as well as health and financial issues. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
Filename: KSretirCoup.rtf

The 50-year-old client has opportunity to build a respectable retirement with stringent commitment now. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
Filename: KSfinRetirePl.rtf

Retirement: Adjustment Difficulty
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. People who spend a lifetime working often have difficulty adjusting to the leisure of retirement and the lack of work identity associated with retirement. Retirement removes all that routine and responsibility in one fell swoop, rendering the individual without meaningful purpose. The writer discusses why retirement is sometimes a difficult transition, as well as what one might do to help ease the process. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Review of "Fair Share or Status Quo? The Twin Cities Livable Communities Act"
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing this article by Edward Goetz. This article is presented as being the report of "research," but its greatest value is in demonstrating when research is not research at all. The article attempts to make broad generalizations without taking broad categories into account. Using metropolitan housing as its focus, it examines microeconomic conditions before and after wrenching changes in macroeconomic and national changes in the decade of the 1970s, a time of double-digit inflation, wage and price controls and eventually credit controls. In essence, it compares apples and oranges, concluding insight measured in pears. Its greatest value lies in demonstrating how not to write a research article. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Review of "Population Overload"
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper reviewing and critiquing Lou Dobbs' article, "Population Overload," which appeared in a newsmagazine in 2003, rehashing and updating many of the old complaints originating in the 1960s and 1970s leading to a doom-and-gloom outlook for the future of America. Dobbs correctly identifies many problems facing the US today – overcrowded, inefficient schools; inadequate health care systems; increased pressure on natural resources; urban sprawl; and the pressures of an increasingly large population that chooses not to adopt the language of the land. The problems are real and solution is difficult, uncomfortable or both; but Dobbs insists that America needs to treat symptoms of our problems rather than the causes. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Review Of Two Empirical Journal Articles On Adolescent Peer Interaction
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Examining the criteria that pertains to the formation of adolescent peer groups, Fink and Wild's "Similarities In Leisure Interests: Effects Of Selection And Socialization In Friendships" and Kipke et al's "Street Youth, Their Peer Group Affiliation And Differences According To Residential Status, Subsistence Patterns, And Use Of Services" provide empirical findings indicative of a combination of social, cultural and academic exchange. Fink and Wild (1995) approach their research from a dual perspective: How significant are interest similarities in relation to friendship choice, and "how does friendship foster the development of commonly shared leisure interests?" (p. 471). Kipke et al (1997) seek to determine how peer relationships and social support are "directly related to social competence, self-esteem, and overall well-being" (p. 655). No additional sources cited.

Review of Two Sociology Studies
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page review of and commentary on two research articles. Both of these studies are revealing, Rosenhan's (1973) for its disturbing honesty; Walker's (1996) for its confirmation of conventional wisdom. Each study also could be used as preliminary information for more comprehensive studies of the same topics. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Rigoberta Menchu’s Expanding Understanding of “Community”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Rigoberta Menchu’s expanding understanding of “community”. Rigoberta Menchu, a Mayan born in poverty in Guatemala, probably did not intend to become an international spokesperson for human rights and global community responsibility but living in the oppressed poor population of Guatemala and seeing her family members killed by the government no doubt had a great impact on her perspective. Her father, a fighter for independence of the people of Guatemala was eventually killed for his beliefs and Menchu continued his battle. Her Mayan culture already had an open perspective of community responsibility in regards to the raising of children. This perspective of community was broadened to include the community of all of the people of her country through her education with Catholic Action which also provided her with the reading, writing and language skills needed to organize political action. Once in Mexico, Menchu realized the enormity of the oppression which existed throughout the world and her idea of community and global responsibility further expanded to include all those in the global community. The catalyst for the present risk society is industrial overproduction. Giddens took a different path. This essay explains and discusses what is meant by the terms 'risk society' and 'world risk society,' what brought it on and how it is conceptualized by social theorists. The writer also includes opinions regarding the validity of the statement. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Sadism And Masochism: A World In The Dark
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The term sets jaws on edge and causes people to avert their eyes away from the person who has the audacity to give voice to such an unconventional activity. It is considered so integral to fringe society that few people want to admit knowing many details for fear they will be labeled as being abnormal. The entire topic of sex, after all, is still taboo for a considerable portion of society, with people conversing about it in very finite social boundaries. When the discussion changes direction to incorporate sadism and masochism, however, the involuntary reaction many people have illustrates the extent to which sexual subcultures are not readily socially acceptable. Unconventionality notwithstanding, the S&M community represents a sexual subculture whereby the giving and receiving of pain is the primary focus, a concept that is both rich in history and quite prevalent in contemporary society. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
Filename: TLC_S&M.rtf

Examination of same-sex marriage, and the issues that surround this topic, is illuminating as to the these two radically opposed positions. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
Filename: khsswed.rtf

Same-Sex Marriages
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. Morality is a grand issue upon which lives are built and destroyed. Veering off course into immoral territory is just where marriages are headed when the wedded couple is of the same sex. Religion is opposed of such acceptance; the general public, for the most part, believes it to be a sinful lifestyle, yet there continues to be a crusade to incorporate the activities of gay and lesbian couples into mainstream society. The writer addresses various issues surrounding same-sex marriages, as well as takes the stand that they are not in the best interest of anyone involved in that reality. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
