Structuration
[ send me this paper ]
14 pages in length. To live within a given society is to conform to the inherent structural components as dictated by the culture that governs the society. Anthony Giddens' theory of structuration illustrates how social and political structure is an ever-evolving entity whose composition cannot be relied upon to remain stagnant; rather, this structure must be looked at from a perspective of theoretical dichotomies that require reconciliation, not the least of which includes agency/structure, subjective/objective, and micro/macro angles. Noting how social practices are "ordered across space and time" (Giddens, 1986, p. 2), the theorist points to the inescapable correlation between agent and collective sum of society whereby agency and structure are equally influenced and addressed.
