The Changing Image, Background & Economics Of Heavy Weight Motorcycle Riders
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The influence of Harley-Davidson
motorcycles upon popular culture has experienced a significant metamorphosis throughout the past several years. Once the image of dirty, unsavory troublemakers, Harley bikers have worked hard to abandon such an unappealing reputation in exchange for a collection of civic-minded, upstanding citizens who have placed their entire heart and soul into the aspect of heavy weight motorcycles. Debunking this bad boy image of motorcycle riders has not been an easy task, inasmuch as the old, unflattering distinction has had a tendency to stick in the public's mind. However, the very nature of motorcycle riding has taken on a new image and vitality within the broad aspect of expanding contemporary lifestyles. This revived reputation has been responsible for attracting more professionals whose desire is to project an image of wholesome fun, community contribution and the freedom that is inherent to the Harley-Davidson experience. [ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the many issues surrounding abortion. Notes that despite the common perception of abortions being sought by strictly irresponsible women, the choice to have an abortion is not always cut and dried. Such choices can involve pregnancies resulting from rape, illegitimate pregnancies, pregnancies in which the mother’s life is endangered, and pregnancies in which the fetus has been determined to be malformed or diseased. Concludes that governmental intervention in these issues is not the solution, that the real solution lies in allowing women to decide on an individual basis whether an abortion is the appropriate course of action. The Concepts Of Economic Development And Human Development
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. There was a time when the separation between economic development and human development were so vast that there was actually very little connection between them. Communities – such as the Amish – viewed economic development as pitching in with one another's tasks, growing food and building homesteads for everyone, and bartering services for services when something was needed beyond the scope of what one's own family might be able to provide. Human development grew out of being confident with one's abilities, realizing one's limitations and fulfilling one's sense of magnanimity by being part of the collective community. Then the industrial age emerged, bringing with it the competitive nature of capitalism, and soon what was once a fair and equitable existence – where a person had peace of mind and no worries about money – quickly turned into a cutthroat society where people battled with one another over acquiring riches to the point where an individual's human development became inextricably interwoven with his ability – or inability – to establish a solid economic development. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

The Construction of National Identity
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing the construction of national identity. National identity is said to be constructed out of several key elements. Firstly, members of a nation construct their national identity out of a shared collective memory of historical events. Many of these memories are actually based on myth but that is irrelevant if these ideals are shared by all. Because of the “selective” memory used in the construction of national identity, desirable aspects of a nation’s history are promoted while less desirable aspects are forgotten or hidden to protect the perception of the national identity. National identity is therefore highly social and interactive between the members of the state, its political system and educational systems among others. Collective national identity may also be based on aspects of shared language or shared cultural and religious beliefs. The concept of national identity is ever changing which relates to social, historical and political changes within the nations and their relationships with other nations around them. Regardless of the dynamic nature of national identity, it cannot be easily forced or changed from the decisions of a few although in many ways, promotion of national identity or collective history and memory is evident throughout the educational systems and the use of national symbols.

The Construction of the Colonial Order: From the Pages of History to Contemporary Times
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page contention that the same construction of the colonial order which has determined much of our history also controls many aspects of our contemporary world. This contention is presented with the backdrop of the historical interaction which occurred between colonizers and the colonized to emphasize that the same scenario is unfolding today even in countries like the United States as our tendency for the world view of “us” verses “them” determines our relations with one another. With such recent incidents as the Rodney King beating, a beating forever etched into our minds by the modern technological marvel of the video camera, the construction of the colonial order has progressed forward from the pages of history and into our contemporary social consciousness. This is a 6 page paper discussing the country of Kenya: its economy, politics, education and family structure. Kenya is one of the East African countries which still maintains the traditional African structure of the extended family which not only links families with similar blood lines but also families who have been joined by marriage. Kenya is a country which is plagued by political and economic strife and these factors are no doubt part of the reason Kenyan families have decided to decrease the number of children within their family structure. Although the traditional roles of the Kenyan family show that it appears to be a male dominated society, in actual fact husbands and wives have a high degree of communication and make joint decisions in regards to family situations and family planning.

The Cultural Dislocation of the African American Slaves
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the various ways in which African American slaves had to suffer from cultural dislocation. The African American slaves suffered a great deal from cultural dislocation from their native homeland in Africa for over two centuries. Cultural dislocation occurs not only from a physical separation from a landscape but also from the customs, religions, laws, family structures and identity which are intrinsically linked with that landscape. Within the African American slave community, personal identities which were linked with their tribal and family units were stripped away upon their arrival in America without being allowed to be reformed. While many slaves adapted to their new circumstances by customizing their community structure and their religion to that of their plantation and Christianity, the basic understanding of the status of a slave was also dislocated as slaves within Africa are allowed rights and often intermarried within the community. The basic condemnation of rights as humans and this division based on color was alien to the Africans and compounded the ability of the slaves to comprehend their situation within their new landscape.

The Cultural Transmission Theory in Sociology
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing the cultural transmission theory in sociology. Cultural transmission theory in sociology addresses the societal and cultural influences, impact and transmission of acceptable societal norms, perceptions and behaviors within generations and across generations of members of the same culture. Transmitted cultural behaviors can lead to generations of racism, sexism, deviance and poverty. One aspect of social evolution to remember however, of which cultural transmission is a major component, is that it is purposeful, innovative and adaptive to new societal changes. Whereas biological evolution takes generations for change, social evolution can occur within generations. Cultural transmission can have a predictable process in which cultures can adapt to societies outside of their own and change their cultural frame accordingly. Despite this process of adaptation however, historical cultural components still exist within the transmission process which results in some of the differences found between different cultures within the same geographical location.
